What a Weekend

February 19th, 2008 by Daron

Friday, Barth Ward (producer extraordinaire) and I went to the Hed Cycling Event atOne on One bicycle studios. We had a really good time, met some new people from Hed and Litespeed and some nutty dude who collects Italian Racing bikes from the early 20th century, drank some beer and looked at vintage bikes with wicked carbon aero wheels. (soon I’ll get used to this blogging thing and I’ll take pics while I’m there). The Litespeed guy told me their newest thing is making the titanium frame for the next Mars rover. I asked Mr Litespeed (can’t remember his name) how they came to make the connection with NASA, he said that the engineers were bike geeks and were well aware of Litespeeds expertise with titanium, and instead of NASA replicating their design, they just gave them the contract. Cool stuff.

Saturday, I Dj’d my god daughters (Sadie and Lena) 14 th birthday party. I’ve Dj’d for many years now and have had few gigs where I’ve had no idea what to play… but this was one of them. I had no clue what 14 year olds listen to, so I asked them to give me a list of what they like. I played for 3 1/2 hrs. The girls and there friends are so much cooler than I was at 14. They danced the whole time … boys and girls.

Sunday (thanks to JMatt), we had the second annual rock-n-roll dad and sons snow tubing day at “green acres“. We all had a fantastic time. What a great bunch of kids. Snow/Snacks and tow ropes, what a good way to spend a Sunday in February at 45 degrees latitude. My son Henry was beside himself, he had so much fun. He wants to go every weekend now.

I took Monday off.

Bowling and Pancakes

January 7th, 2008 by Modern Music

auntjemimasml.jpg In case you didn’t know, Modern Music has a bowling team in the Minneapolis Ad League Bowling league. In fact we’re so good we won the whole damn thing last year. Every Monday night at Memory Lanes you’ll find us bowling, drinking, and most of all winning. We usually pummel our opponents then try to leave before the death metal bands start playing at around 10 PM. Team members include Bryan Hanna of Modern Music, Bill Rogina of Fischer Edit, and our good friend and great photographer, Becky Olstad. As a result of our overwhelming success in 2007, we were able to score a full season sponsorship from the fine fine folks at Aunt Jemima Pancake Syrup. After all breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Head on down to Memory Lanes on Monday nights from January to April, and we’ll fix you up a stack of pancakes with all the syrup you can pour down your throat.

Riding Bikes + Raising Money

November 7th, 2007 by Modern Music

For the third straight year, our team of riders from Modern Music and Fischer Edit participated in the Minnesota MS-150. With the help of our friends and clients, and an amazingly generous matching grant from Tony Fischer (on behalf of our company), we were able to raise almost $8000 to contribute to the fight to find a cure for Multiple Sclerosis.

The MS-150 is truly an amazing event. The energy of all the participants, the volunteers, and the MS society is astonishing. Throughout the weekend everyone you meet is in a good mood. Even though everyone is suffering from the bike ride to some degree, everyone is having fun. In contrast to everyday life, it feels natural to strike up a friendly conversation with anyone you see.

This year our group of riders was bigger than ever with Jess Ford and Daron Walker of Modern Music, Bill Rogina, Brian Slater, and jMatt Keil from Fischer Edit, Karl Madcharo from Kerker, and Barb Smith (former Fischer Edit business manager). Next year we’re hoping to lure even more of our friends and clients to do the ride with us. If you have taken the time to read this far, then maybe you’d like to join the party!?

The highlight of the weekend (of which there were many) was a cookout with friends and family who made the trip up to Hinckley on Saturday and camped out for the night. The food, the weather, the company, and the riding were unforgettable. Hope to see you next year!
